Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System
Date of the Experience: 18 June 2010
Since I missed the Sian Ka'an tour and I was late on my time table, I decided to quickly move to Belize following the route preferred by independent travelers: the Water Taxi from Chetumal to San Pedro & Caye Caulker (for more details see the box: Water Taxi from Chetumal (Mexico) To San Pedro & Caye Caulker (Belize)). I left Tulum (Mexico) in the morning, and I arrived at Caye Caulker (Belize) at sunset time.Video of the Experience
This video has been recorded during the diving tour departing from Caye Caulker with destination Blue Hole and Half Moon Caye Natural Monument.(Frenchie's Diving - Lighthouse Reef and the Blue Hole)
The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System is actually composed by 7 different sites that are spread all over the Caribbean Sea in front of the Belizean coast:
- Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve
- Blue Hole
- Glovers Reef Marine Reserve
- Half Moon Caye Natural Monument
- Laughing Bird Caye National Park
- Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve
- South Wather Caye Marine Reserve
These sites are far from each other and they are not easy to reach. I knew that visiting them all was an almost impossible mission, considering the limited time and budget available. But my goal was just one: to experience the symbol of Belize, the world famous Blue Hole.
The Blue Hole is a sort of circular tunnel that sinks vertically into the sea bed. The obvious way to experience it is to dive into it. The Blue Hole is located in the middle of the Lighthouse Reef Atoll, the farthest offshore of the three atoll reefs off the coast of Belize. Scuba diving the mythical Great Blue Hole is the reason why many enthusiast divers come to Belize from all over the world. Most of the scuba diving shops and schools in Belize organize tours to the Great Blue Hole dive site, departing from different locations. The most popular location, from where tours depart, is surely San Pedro, but Caye Caulker is the preferred choice by independent travelers that are looking for and cheaper accommodations and a truly laid back atmosphere. Considering that it is closer to the Lighthouse Reef Atoll, and scuba diving tours are less expensive from there, I gave it my preference.

I spent only three days in Caye Calker, not enough to fully appreciate the surreal atmosphere of the caye. No cars, no asphalt, no shoes, and lots of hammock available for relaxing while enjoying the cool sea breeze. Fortunately just enough to enroll for the next available full day "Lighthouse Reef - Blue Hole" trip organized by Frenchie's Diving (apparently the only business in the caye that was running diving trips during the low season).
Only when the weather forecasts turned good and enough people willing to join trip finally materialized, the schedule was confirmed. Meeting time: 5:00 am... After a quick breakfast and the necessary equipment check, the navigation towards the Great Blue Hole began.

Water Taxi from Chetumal (Mexico) To San Pedro & Caye Caulker (Belize)
Apparently this option, usually undocumented by travel guides, offer a not too expensive alternative to the annoying border crossing that requires bus changes and walking through a dodgy area to an unpredictable and time wasting custom office. It is well advertised at the bus station and there is also a desk where you can buy a ticket (a considerable surcharge is applied). A cheaper ticket can be purchased directly at the harbor office. It should be easy to share the taxi with other travellers to get to the harbor. After about two hours of unexciting sailing along small mangrove islands (one apparently owned by Leonardo DiCaprio) the boat arrives to the custom office at San Pedro Island (La Isla Bonita).
Then back to the boat to arrive at Caye Calker at the sunset…

The Red Footed Booby
The forest at the south end of the Half Moon Caye is populated by a unique kind of seabird: the Red footed Booby.A short path leads to the observation point from where it is possible to admire the big colony of boobies that are usually standing on the highest branches of the forest's trees.
Do not forget to look on the ground to see the Hermit Crabs.

Most people get to Amberginis Caye and Caye Caulker from Belize City using the Water Taxi.
As I was arriving from Mexico I used the water taxi from Chetumal. See the Water Taxi from Chetumal (Mexico) To San Pedro & Caye Caulker (Belize) for details.
